Landscape design cost in Austin: what a plan costs, what it includes, and what the install from it runs
A design fee buys decisions before dirt moves, and in Austin, with its sun, slopes, rules and water, those decisions are worth more than in most places. Here is what plans cost in 2026, what you should get for the money, and how the fee turns into a credit.
Three levels of design
A consultation, $150 to $300: two hours on site with a designer, notes, a sketch on a plat, and a plant list. Right for a bed, a side yard, or an owner who wants to do the work themselves. A front-yard plan, $500 to $1,200: a scaled drawing of the front, beds, lawn, paths, trees and lighting, with a plant list by name, size and quantity, and an irrigation zone sketch. Right for a makeover or an HOA submittal. A full-property plan, $1,200 to $3,000: the whole lot, hardscape, grading and drainage, irrigation zones, lighting, a planting plan grouped by water need, and a phasing plan if it will be built over seasons.
What a plan should include
A scaled drawing you can measure from. A plant list with botanical names, container sizes and counts. A note on soil, which in Austin means clay or limestone and what to do about it. Hardscape materials named. Irrigation zones drawn so a licensed irrigator can build them. Existing trees located with diameters, because the protected ones constrain what can be dug near them. And one round of revisions. A plan without a plant list or a scale is a sketch, and should be priced as one.
The credit
When the same contractor installs the design, the plan fee comes off the installation price in full. When another contractor installs it, or the owner does, the fee stands. That is the arrangement here and it is worth confirming with anyone who quotes a design.
What an installation from a plan runs
| Installation | 2026 range | Driver |
|---|---|---|
| Front yard from a plan | $5,000 – $15,000 | Plant sizes, stone, drip |
| Full property, planting-led | $15,000 – $25,000 | Area, tree sizes |
| Full property with patio, walls, lighting | $25,000 – $60,000+ | Hardscape share |
| Planting and beds only | $8 – $20 per sq ft | Plant sizes, soil |
| Phased over two or three seasons | Same total | Hardscape first, plants last |
Questions to ask before paying for a design
Is it drawn to scale? Does the plant list have sizes and counts? Has the designer looked at the yard in July or only in March? Is the plan built for the watering rules and the HOA? Does the fee credit against the install? Can it be built in phases? A good designer answers all six without hesitation.
Questions on this
Can I skip the plan and just have beds installed?
For a small bed, yes; a consultation covers it. Once hardscape, irrigation or more than a dozen plants are involved, a plan saves more than it costs by preventing the second attempt.
How long does a plan take?
Two to four weeks from the site visit, including one round of changes.
Do you design around deer?
Yes. Lakeway, Dripping Springs, Leander and the greenbelt edges of Austin get a plant list built from what the deer leave alone.
Will the HOA accept the plan as a submittal?
Usually; most committees want a scaled drawing and a plant list, which is what the plan is. The submittal package is prepared from it.
What if I want to install it myself?
The plan is yours. Plants and stone can be sourced from the list, and the irrigation portion still needs a licensed irrigator by Texas law.
Does the plan include lighting and irrigation design?
Zones and fixture locations, yes. The detailed irrigation design is done by the licensed irrigator at installation; the lighting layout is walked at dusk before fixtures go in.
