Sod installation cost in Austin: per square foot, by grass, with the prep that decides the number
Sod is sold by the pallet and installed by the square foot, and the grass itself is often the smallest line. The prep, the old lawn out, the soil in, the grade and the irrigation, is where the number moves. Here is the whole thing for Austin in 2026, with a worked example.
Per square foot, installed
| Grass | Installed, minimal prep | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Bermuda (common, Tifway, Celebration) | $0.90 – $1.40 | Full sun, traffic, drought |
| St. Augustine (Raleigh, Palmetto, Floratam) | $1.10 – $1.80 | Shade under oaks, more water |
| Zoysia (Palisades, Zeon, Emerald) | $1.30 – $2.20 | Sun to part shade, dense, slow |
Minimal prep means the old lawn is dead or thin, the grade is fine, and the sod goes onto scarified soil. A pallet covers about 450 square feet; a typical backyard is four to eight pallets.
The prep lines
Old lawn removal and haul-off, $0.30 to $0.60 per square foot: sod-cutting a living lawn and hauling the strips. Topsoil, $0.40 to $0.90 per square foot: four inches of screened soil, essential on limestone lots west of MoPac and useful on compacted builder lots everywhere. Grading, $200 to $800: fixing the slope so water runs away from the house and does not pond. Irrigation adjustment, $85 to $200: the licensed irrigator walks the zones so every square foot of new sod gets water, and adds heads where the old lawn had none. Soil amendment, $0.30 to $0.60 per square foot: compost tilled in on clay.
A worked example
A 2,000-square-foot backyard in Round Rock, dead Bermuda on compacted clay, being replaced with Bermuda: removal at $0.40 is $800; compost at $0.40 is $800; grading $300; irrigation adjustment $150; Bermuda sod installed at $1.10 is $2,200. About $4,250, in the range on the sod page. The same yard in Zoysia is about $6,000. The same yard in Cedar Park on limestone adds topsoil at $0.60, another $1,200.
When sod is the wrong answer
A thin lawn that is the right grass for the light usually comes back with a season of feeding, pre-emergent, aeration and proper watering, for a tenth of the price of sod. A lawn that fails in deep shade will fail again as sod; the fix is a different grass or a bed. And a lawn laid in July without a watering plan is money on the ground; sod goes in October through April. The walk-through says which case yours is.
Questions on this
How many pallets do I need?
Square footage divided by about 450, rounded up. A 2,000-square-foot yard is five pallets.
Why is Zoysia so much more?
It grows slowly, so the sod farm takes longer to produce it, and it is in demand for its density and shade tolerance. It also repairs slowly, which is worth knowing with dogs.
Do I really need topsoil?
On limestone, yes; sod on two inches of caliche dies in July. On deep clay, compost tilled in matters more than topsoil.
Can new sod be watered under the restrictions?
Austin Water allows a temporary variance for establishing new landscape, which covers the daily watering sod needs for its first weeks. The contractor explains how to request it.
Can I seed instead of sod?
Bermuda can be seeded in late spring for a fraction of the cost, with a summer of weeds and watering before it fills in. St. Augustine and most Zoysias are not available as seed. Sod is the answer for a lawn this year.
How soon can the dog go on it?
Two to three weeks, once a corner cannot be lifted. Keep traffic light the first month.
