Tree trimming in Austin, where the oaks set the calendar and the city sets the limits
Austin's canopy is live oak, pecan, cedar elm, red oak and ash, most of it older than the houses beneath it. Trimming it well is a matter of cutting the right limbs, in the right month, in the right way, and knowing when a tree is big enough that the city has a say.
Good trimming has a vocabulary. Crown cleaning removes dead, dying, broken and rubbing limbs, which is most of what a mature live oak needs. Crown raising lifts the lowest limbs over a roof, a driveway or a sidewalk; Austin requires clearance over streets and walks, and a limb scraping shingles is wearing a hole in the roof. Crown thinning opens a dense canopy to wind and light so a storm goes through the tree rather than taking it; it is done sparingly, a few percent of live wood, never the hollowed-out lion-tailing that leaves tufts at the ends of bare limbs. Reduction shortens a limb back to a lateral to pull a tree off a house or a power line. Topping, cutting limbs back to stubs, is not on the list; it ruins the tree's structure and is refused.
The oak wilt rule governs the calendar. Oak wilt is a fungus spread by beetles drawn to fresh wounds on live and red oaks, and it has killed oaks across Central Texas by the thousand. Live and red oaks are pruned between July and January, outside the beetles' active season, and every cut is painted immediately with pruning sealer or latex paint. Pecans, elms and ash can be pruned in late winter. An emergency cut on an oak in spring is still painted at once.
The city's tree ordinance applies to removal, not trimming, so pruning a protected or heritage tree needs no permit. But a trim that removes more than a quarter of the canopy of a heritage tree, or root cutting near one, is treated by the city as damaging the tree, and the crew keeps well inside that line. Climbers in harnesses handle the big oaks over houses; a bucket truck handles street trees with access; nothing is done with spikes on a tree that is staying.
What the crew brings to it
Climbers for the big oaks
Harness-and-rope climbing over houses and pools; bucket trucks where there is access; no spikes on a living tree.
The oak-wilt window
Live and red oaks pruned July to January; every cut painted at once, including emergency cuts out of season.
Proper cuts, no topping
Cuts at the branch collar, reduction to a lateral; limbs stubbed or topped are not something the crews will do.
Heritage trees respected
Canopy reduction kept well under the city's threshold on protected and heritage trees; roots left alone.
Cleanup included
Brush chipped, wood cut to length or hauled, lawn raked, before the truck leaves.
Storm response
Hangers and broken limbs after a storm dispatched by priority, the same day where there is a hazard.

Questions about tree trimming
When can oaks be trimmed?
July through January, to stay outside oak wilt beetle season. Cuts are painted at once regardless of month. Pecans, elms and ash are best pruned in late winter.
Do I need a permit to trim a big oak?
No. The City of Austin regulates removal, not pruning. Removing more than a quarter of a heritage tree's canopy counts as damage, though, and the crew stays well inside that.
Can you trim a limb off a neighbor's tree that hangs over my yard?
Texas law generally lets you trim to the property line, but a cut that harms the tree can be your liability. Talking to the neighbor first is cheaper than a lawyer, and the crew will trim to the line properly.
How much can come off at once?
On a healthy mature tree, no more than about a quarter of the live canopy in a year, and usually much less. Deadwood does not count toward that.
Will you top my tree to keep it small?
No. Topping leaves stubs that rot and sprouts that break; the tree ends up weaker and uglier. Reduction cuts to a lateral do the job properly.
A limb came down in last night's storm. How fast can someone come?
A hanger over a roof, a car or a walkway is dispatched by priority the same day. A limb lying in the yard is scheduled within a few days.
